2022 Malaysian Open Stats

By GilaChess - August 29, 2022

Malaysians still make the highest number of participants but only just. Indonesia almost overtook Malaysian this time. It's a little disappointing the number of Malaysians have dropped compared to before the pandemic in 2019. I feel more Malaysians should take advantage of chances of meeting strong players and chances of increasing ratings or even getting norms. Countries like India, Philippines and Indonesia are certainly keen on doing this.

Besides increase of Indonesian participation the Indian contingent looks notable with 12 representatives. A few are promising juniors looking to increase ELO and hunting for norms. Two of which are :
15 year old WIM Sahithi Varshini who represented India 3 in the recent Chennai Olympiads and 19 year old IM Kaustav Chatterjee.
