Note: The championship was known for a long time as the National Closed and then changed to National Chess Championship and finally to the present Malaysian Chess Championship. Regardless, the function of the tournament is the same - to determine the National Champion for Malaysia. As is common in other countries, the champion will automatically gain the title NM (National Master)
