Chess and Corruption

While cheating in chess has been a major concern in recent years, there have also been instances of corruption in the world of chess. Some examples of such cases include:

.

  1. Bid rigging and bribery: In 2015, the FIDE (International Chess Federation) suspended two of its officials for alleged involvement in bid rigging and bribery related to the selection of host cities for the World Chess Championship

  2. Embezzlement: In 2018, the treasurer of the French Chess Federation was arrested on suspicion of embezzling around 300,000 euros from the organization.

  3. Conflict of interest: In 2017, the FIDE's Deputy President was accused of a conflict of interest for his involvement with a company that was awarded a contract to organize chess tournaments.
  4. Misuse of funds: In 2018, the former President of the Spanish Chess Federation was sentenced to prison for misusing public funds intended for chess programs.

  5. Fraudulent player ratings: There have been instances where players have been found to have manipulated their ratings by playing against weaker opponents in unofficial tournaments. In 2015, the FIDE banned several players from such activities.

Of course, these are just examples found via simple search engine queries. There is definitely more particular corruption than went undetected. Also if you know of any other cases please leave a comment. As chess lovers we should not condone acts of corruption especially when it will kill the game. We should not turn a blind eye giving excuses as this does not affect us directly etc.
