Synch - Art by Phil Cho

Before I stopped my physical collection of comics (yes I was an avid collector of Marvel comics), I came across Synch which I found interesting. He can mimic the talents and powers of nearby mutants.

What has Synch got to do with chess? Absolutely nothing except it's the same name as the tool I use to synch my local and live chess website. Totally useful!

Besides that it's a good analogy to AI. There powerhouse chess learning website such as Chessable and Chessly but they are behind paywalls. I remember that Gotham Chess aka Levy Rozman actually hired programmers to do up Chessly. That was before AI and human programmers had value. Today, platforms like Chessly and Chessable can easily be built by a person sitting at home with a USD 20 monthly subscription to Claude.

So one can "synch", immitate all the features of the best teaching websites on the planet today. It's just coding. The differentiator is of course value. Gotham puts in effort to curate the course, design openings that are interesting to beginners etc. Chessable strength doesn't come from it's platform but it's "teachers", top coaches and grandmasters who use the platform to build courses.

My aim is to make the exact platforms (possibly make improvements) to learn chess online and to take it out of the paywall and make it free. It's a playful idea but one that is surprisingly feasible in today's AI environment.
