Chess battle in downtown KL

By GilaChess - September 04, 2005

A fierce chess battle is taking place in an area of Kuala Lumpur city known as "Chow Kit". Chow Kit is a long road where you can find all sorts of shops that sells a variety of cheap goods. It's also known as the downtown area of KL so it's the most unlikely place to find gladiators of the mind doing battle. This place is well known for ease of getting whatever things you may want such as clothes, bags, and even cheap imitation goods. A kaleidoscope of colours and fragrances dominates the Chow Kit "wet market" which is one of the largest wet markets in Kuala Lumpur. At the hotel Stanford, there are 44 players vying for the 2 coveted places to represent this zone for the FIDE world championship 2005. One of the hot favourites is GM Mark Paragua of the Philipines (picture from 3rd round vs GM Edhi Handoko. The other strong contenders are super GM Dao Thien Hai, GM Anthonio Rogelio, GM Utut Adianto and many more GMs whom have equal opportunity to win. One of the surprise of the tournament is WGM Anya Corke who did not play in the Women Zonal section. She instead opt to play in the Men's Zonal Open Zonal. Here's a tense position from Anya's game that is still on going. Anya is Black.
