Been worried that my move from maribelajar.com for the Malaysian Chess Blogs website was a mistake as the load time on the new site (catur.org) was very slow.
It turns out that it was my mistake for not tweaking the website and using some common caching and 3rd party tools like CDN (content delivery network). The site can be further speeded up by using some cloud services but I will wait till I have more free time to do that.
The speed increase is significant (almost 10 times faster!) and definitely noticeable. Tell me if the load time is still slow at your area.

P/S: Latest update. After letting the cache settle down for a couple of hours, another quick test and the site load time is even faster.
At least now it says “Your website is faster than 38% of all tested websites” for the first time
I keep up with all the chess news and tech news via Google reader which was my only reader I used for years. The advantage is clear as I can read all the contents I’m interested in, in one place. I do not have to visit each and every website to keep up.
Google for some strange reason will be retiring Google Reader on 1st of July and I’ve tried many RSS reader alternatives. The best by far is Feedly and I think I will stick with this as it is available as an app on my phone, ipod and ipad. It’s also available as a plugin on my PC.
Definitely the best news reader !

As usual check out Alex Wohl’s blog for his take on Round 9.
Looking at the banner below I can understand why it is a misunderstanding.
It’s actually the 60th anniversary Annual Dinner for the KL Hawker & Petty Trader’s Association.
Petaling Street is actually much older. 143 years old to be precise according to Wikipedia.
Still check out Alex Wohl picture of this colourful dinner.
Anyway today is a double round day for the KL Masters.
Today’s round 8 completed this morning and the results is as below.

Fixing this for a chess friend whose Windows OS has crashed. It’s a dual boot machine so it has both Apple Max OS as well as Microsoft Windows. Previously Windows crashed (no surprise ) so only the Apple OS was usable. Now at the dual boot screen it is only black.
I tried starting it up and all I see is a black screen.
That’s my own mac side by side the “black screen” Mac. They look identical.
Restored in less than 5 minutes. Apparently the brightness was set all the way down to zero hence the black screen.
So the Apple OS was not at fault. It was working all the time
I will still need to fix the Windows crash which will take more time and involve reformatting the Windows partition. I still feel the Air is one of the best notebook for a chess player for it’s mobility. I fully recommend it to any chess player particularly now that the new models can run up to 12 hours. The starting price for a brand new Air is around RM 2999.
I like it because it is very customisable. You can choose the size of the board, the layout, the notation font and size etc.
What do you think?
