Big Money events coming up

Local chess players never had it better with the coming Malacca's 750th year anniversary where some grand chess events have been lined up. The total prize money offered is the biggest ever offered in Malaysia.

According to Najib's mass email to the chess bloggers :-

The event shall start with an 11 round International Rapid event offering a prize fund of USD 20,000 to be played over the 2 days weekend, followed by Classical event over 9 rounds for 2 categories - Open International and Challenger, offering a total prize fund of up to RM 50,000.

That's USD 20,000 plus another RM 50,000 in prize money. The event is scheduled from 20th April to 1st May. Right after that there will be the KL Open 2012 (or properly known as the DYTM Raja Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters & International Open 2012) on 25th May with a prize fund of RM 50,000.

It helps out kids in their visual memory, improving their attention span and capacity to predict and anticipate consequences. I see the same advantages inherent in Starcraft too.

In this day and age, you'd think the old Dragon was slain so many times it's extinct. It's still alive in today's chess, surprisingly. Lots of resource have been found for the Black player to infuse new dragon's breath to this old opening.

Weaker NJCC

Both Yeoh Li Tian and Wong Jian Wen are not playing in the National Juniors which is essentially is an under 20 junior event. Understandable as both have played in some tiring events such as the Asian Amateurs, Penang Open and Sarawak Open. Favorites are most probably Mark Siew, MOHD Nabil and Roshan. Who is your pick to be 2011 National Junior master. Incidentally the same initials - NJM is also awarded to the girls section.

You know the horrible stories of waiters spitting on food of bad tippers. I have a suspicious feeling I am getting similiar treatment.

Almost as soon as a mentioned how bad the web hosting company Exabyte service is, GilaChess.com and blog.GilaChess.com are down due to internal database error ("Error establishing Database connection" message)

I know it could be a coincidence but it's really something I hate. As mention before,I could complain to exabytes but as in numerous incidents their technical support will blame me for overusing their server resources. That's a little silly considering how low my traffic is for all my chess hosted websites. Also being a web programmer by profession, I rechecked all my plugins and scripts to make sure none of them could be overusing Exabytes server CPU resources.

I sincerely hope its really isa coincidence and my websites will be restored soon ( after some other customer complains and gets blamed for overusing the shared resources and the server is restarted)

No sooner had I mentioned Exabytes spotty services, I cannot connect to my gilachess blog due to database error. This is a common occurrence. I have given up callling on Exabytes support as they will most probably pin the blame on me saying I've used up too much server resources. Sometimes I think I am not the only customer who avoids complaining for fear of being blamed.

NJM - Is that even a title?

Someone asked me if NJM - National Junior Master is a recognised title.

I don't see that title listed in FIDEs website so I guess it's recognised only by MCF since it was created by them.

Even more recent is the newly minted Amateur Master (AM) title won by Ahmad Fadzil Nayan. FIDE doesn't recognise that title but since the Asian Chess Federation 'created' that title so it has some value I guess.

The purpose for these newly created titles is to give more value and prestige to the tournament that is held and also the winner of that title.

I also noticed that there is no cash prizes for junior events such as the National Juniors. So the prestige of the title NJM is important as well the right to represent the country in junior events. Entrance fees are RM 60 (FIDE rated) and RM 100 (unrated) for the coming National Juniors starting next Monday.

So to answer the question asked, yes NJM is a recognised title by the national federation.

The lower boards may have seen many absentees but the stronger teams all turned out and are fighting it out.

Some notable players who turned up are IM Jimmy Liew, Sumant, Zaidan, Fairin, Fadli, Abdul Haq, Yeoh Li Tian, Yeoh Chin Seng, Abdullah Che Hassan.

Exabyte loyal customer no more

RM 80 for reactivation fees!!

Blogging for chess is not cheap. Especially when I have to pay th RM 80 on to of the annual fees to maintain my website. That's just for chess-malaysia portal. GilaChess.com renewal coming up in two weeks :(

It's my fault for being late but it was only two days. I have been a customer of Exabytes since 2000. That's more than 10 years of being a loyal customer of Exabyte. Well, I'm afraid this renewal will be the last as apparently Exabyte don't value long term customers.

I know it's customary to charge for late fees and all web hosting services do that. I chose Exabytes because they were local and service was good (in the beginning). Nowadays services is spotty and I keep getting stern warning that I'm overusing their CPU resources when I strongly believe I haven't.

P/S: Also notice I'm posting on Blogspot instead of my Exabyte hosted blog as I have confidence this post will stay up longer (without constant downtimes) than what I have in Exabyte.

Conduct of players

No smoking, no hand phone and no analysis of games are allowed in the tournament hall.

Immediately after each game, the winners or the drawers playing white have to return the score sheets and chess clocks to the arbiter while the opponents have to rearrange back the pieces.

Believe it or not that's how I asked for results from chess organisers in 1999 when I started my chess blog. Back then it was not GilaChess yet but called Chessnut at a free webhost space on Snap.com.

Sounds like begging doesn't it? Back then local chess websites were rare with exception of the many tournament blogs started by Quah Seng Sun.

Fast forward more than 10 years and sadly, I find that even though there are as many as 30+ chess blogs in Malaysia, chess bloggers are still begging for the results in some tournaments.If you see bloggers putting up blurry camera shots of the results it means they did not get the results too and most probably they don't want to beg for the results and taking picture of the paper is the fastest way to get the results out.

Is it so difficult to send the results via email? Even better, just publish the results to chess-results.com.

Sad isn't it? Bloggers do what they do without hoping for any monetary compensation. All this is done for the love of the game. Also when the organisers want publicity, chess bloggers do the promotion for them but when bloggers ask for the results, we don't get it! Of course not all chess organisers are like this but there are those who simply think that once the event is over, their job is complete. Heck cares about the whining bloggers waiting for results.

For me, I try to remember chess organisers like these and will probably give them the same "karma" when they want the same publicity next year.

P/S: I respect organizers that always make sure I got the results. Without asking they say something like "Here. take this thumb drive and copy the results" or "check your email, already sent".

The flip side is those organizers who treat us worse than beggars. Even after asking for the results, there is no reply.

Kids just play too fast

One thing I noticed at last week's junior event is that played at blitz speed even though the event was a rapid 25 minutes time control event.

They played so fast that the whole tournament was over before lunch time! Even though it was only 6 rounds, it was scheduled to end only at 5pm! Of course, I'm sure everybody was happy to go back a couple hours earlier but this is not a good thing for the kids playing habits in the long run.

Can't blame the organisers to be efficient and immediately make pairings as soon as all the games were completed. However my suggestion is that they follow the schedule and not start any game earlier even though all the games for that round has concluded. This will force the kids to wait and let them feel the "penalty" of finishing their games too early.

That's just my 2 cents.

Cheaper place to park instead of DATCC

Referring to Yatzchess article on Capsquare parking, I tried to park there today (Saturday) to see if I can avoid the RM 6 car park fees for DATCC.

For one thing, the basement car park look a little nicer than Wilayah fourth floor car park. One correction is its no longer RM 2 but RM 3 flat rate for wekend parking. Still that is half the price of parking in DATCC.

Confirmed, this is my car park of choice for DATCC weekend events. Also, the place is only 2 minutes walk to DATCC (yes I timed it!).

I had a bad experience parking at DATCC one time. I did a favour and dropped off some chess equipment for DATCC. According to the car park sign, the first 15 minutes is free. So I rushed a little and made it to the car park exit in 11 minutes. I told the collection man at the booth it was less than 15 minutes but he just smiled and said 6 ringgit. I repeated what I said and he just repeated enam ringgit. Apparently he is a foreigner and those two words may be the only two words in Malay he knows. I grudgingly paid the RM 6 aas I didn't want to argue and waste my time.

Reminder: Warrior Weekender tomorrow

DATCC will be organizing its 3rd rapid weekender series with the Warrior Rapid Chess Weekend on Sunday, 22nd May 2011 starting with players registration and confirmation at 9:00am followed by Round 1 at 10:00am Prize winners and prize fund has been increased to attract more players to participate in the 3rd edition with the Champion to earn RM350 and prizes given to the top 10 players. Other prizes include the Best Lady, Best Veteran and Best U12 players and category prizes for players rated in the 1600 category and 1400 category including Unrated players who has yet to earn MCF rating points. This is a Nationally rated event where players can earn valuable rating points to improve their standings amongst local chess players. The previous 2 weekender events have been sent for rating and 9 players who participated in the DATCC Weekender series has topped the National top 20 most improved players for the period from Jan to April 2011. Entry fees is set at RM30 for Adults and RM20 for students below 12 years old. For the first time there is bigger prize fund in the National Championship (formerly called National Closed). The name change and the bump in prize money gives the national tournament more prestige and is sure to attract more participants this year. The details :-

This is the last reminder that your Linux shared hosting services will be migrated to the new data center on the 24th Feb 2010. Please find below the additional details concerning the migration:
Actual physical server migration date / time: 9.00pm GMT+8 24 Feb 2010
Expected Interruption hours: 5 - 9 hours (9.00pm 24 Feb 2010 – 6.00am 25 Feb 2010)

1.We will power down the server at the existing data center.
2.Wrap and pack the servers nicely to avoid any hardware issue during the servers transportation to the data center (from Cyberjaya to AIMS KL data center)
3.Un-wrap the server upon our arrival at the new data center and conduct a power test at the data center staging room to ensure there’s no power issue which may possibly trip the data center’s power source. Server will be shut down once again upon the successful power test.
4.We will rack the server into the server rack and power up the server.
5.We will start the IP renumbering on the server once the server is powered-on at the server rack. We expect to take about 30-45 minutes for each server renumbering to complete.
6.The entire migration process complete.

1.If you are subscribing for 3rd party DNS services which redirects your domain Internet traffic to your shared hosting account (for Web ,FTP ,Database connection or Email), you will need to login to the 3rd party DNS service provider control panel to update the IP addresses to point to the new IP addresses as above on the 25 Feb 2010. For domains runningSSL certificates, we will reassign a new dedicated IP for your domain in which you can check this by login to the cPanel control panel after the migration is completed.
2.All Web Services, Email Services, FTP services, SSH and cPanel Control Panel will be changed to the new IP address as above.
3.DNS Name Server IP will be changed. As you are using our pair of shared hosting name server *.mschosting.com, we will update the IP from our end upon the completion of migration. There are NO changes required from your end for DNS name server IP.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Although we do run backup on our shared hosting server on daily basis, however, we do strongly recommend you to perform a full backup of your own website files and database to your local terminal before the migration date.

With the crazy number of tournaments organised in around Malaysia (mainly in the Klang Valley), there is a surge in the traffic for Gilachess.com

Note this is not the blog but just Gilachess.com the website with event announcements. Seems like chess enthusiasts are keen to know about new chess tournaments and looking through the results.
